What are WEBP Images?

WebP is an image format that was developed by Google in 2010 to significantly reduce the file size of images on the web. It builds on Google's VP8 video format to enable both lossless and lossy image compression. A key benefit of WebP images is that they can reduce image file sizes to about 25-35% of comparable JPEG images while maintaining the same image quality. This results in much faster page loading times and improved user experience on websites.

Despite the file size benefits, WebP does have some disadvantages in terms of compatibility compared to more established formats like JPG and PNG. Some older web browsers may not fully support rendering WebP images. There is also limited support for WebP in some image editing applications and graphics software. However, overall browser support for WebP continues to grow, especially among modern web browsers like Chrome, Firefox and Opera. Leading technology companies like Google, Facebook, Netflix and eBay have already adopted WebP for their websites to take advantage of faster load times. As more services begin leveraging WebP images, wider adoption across the web is expected.
